Saving On Winter Home Heating Bills

By admin | Nov 7, 2008

As energy costs are going up everyday, are you still paying high for your winter home heating energy bills? Well, with some simple energy saving tips from me, I am sure you get to reduce your bills drastically yet keep yourself warm during this winter. With many years of experience of home building and addition to home, the following energy saving tips will certainly be useful to you if you follow them carefully.

Saving On Winter Home Heating Bills With Simple Tips Below :

1. Check the serviceability of your home heating system and properly tuned to ensure maximum heating efficiency. Make sure all flues, nozzles, and burners are thoroughly cleaned and all filters changed.

2. Lower your hot water temperature of your heating system by 5 to 10 degrees so that you can save on your energy costs and prevent scalds when taking showers or washing showers.

3. Check and make sure all the heating ductwork and pipes in the basement are properly insulated to prevent heat loss. Check your attic insulation too. Your attic should have 9 to 15 inches of insulation in it and installed properly.

4. Always fill up your oil and gas tanks before the cold weather hits as the costs of oil and gas are typically higher during winter due to a surge demand.

5. Check the caulk around your exterior doors and windows. Install new caulk if they are not caulked or the caulk is old. Examine the door weather stripping and replace it if it is old or light can be seen seeping in-between the door and door jambs.

6. Install a programmable thermostat and set it with 5 to 10 degrees lower when you are away from the home for extended hours or when you are asleep during the night.

Hope my simple energy saving tips above can help you in saving your home heating bills during winter.

Thanks for all the tips. For #6, programmable thermostats, I heard they can save 10% off bills. but for those who still need help, I found this site which gave some ways and programs that give people aid and help save on heating and utility bills. Help is provided both from the gov’t and utility companies themselves.

Any other good aid sites? Thanks
